Alabama hosted the SDITE 2018 Annual Meeting in Mobile on April 8-11. The meeting was the culmination of several years of planning and hard work from our Alabama folks. Special thanks go out to Shane Bergin and Jennifer White for doing a great job as Local Arrangements Committee Co-chairs. Thanks to everyone else on the LAC for their role in putting together a great event. For those of you that may not know, our own Becky Rogers is currently serving on the SDITE Executive Board as Secretary-Treasurer. Becky was uniquely involved in meeting planning and execution for both the LAC and SDITE!
The meeting started Sunday evening with a welcome reception on the patio with entertainment from the Blow House Brass Band, followed by some great food and fellowship courtesy of the ABD Hospitality Suites. Monday’s opening session officially kicked off the meeting, and the creativity of the Sections during roll call was on full display – everything from Mardi Gras flare to a plush Nashville stuffed catfish to special guests from the Colonial era were part of the ceremony. The Alabama Section closed out the roll call with a bang – literally – with confetti cannons and a greeting to all of the attendees from ALSITE President, “Captain” Cody Long. ALDOT Director John Cooper provided the keynote address at the opening session.
Monday continued with informative technical sessions, discussion panels, vendor exhibits, Wallace Tunnel technical tours, and preliminary rounds of the traffic bowl. On Monday evening, the attendees enjoyed the ABD Event at the Battleship USS Alabama. A delicious meal was served in the adjacent hangar, and attendees could get on the battleship and tour the various decks and rooms on display.
On Tuesday, the SDITE Annual Business Meeting was conducted, technical sessions continued, and Port of Mobile by Water technical tours were conducted. In a bit of a “cat-fight”, the Clemson Tigers came out on top over the Auburn Tigers and Kentucky Wildcats in the traffic bowl final.
While the meeting attendees were soaking in the knowledge, many spouses and guests of the meeting attendees enjoyed touring some of Mobile’s most famous museums, gardens, homes, and restaurants.
Tuesday’s events concluded with the Officers’ Reception and Annual Banquet. Our neighbors to the west in the Deep South Section of ITE were well represented with individual award recipients at the banquet – congratulations to all of the winners! Representatives from SDITE’s Virginia Section and the Mid-Colonial District of ITE (MCDITE) extended an invitation to the 2019 Joint SDITE/MCDITE Annual Meeting. This meeting will take place on March 31-April 3, 2019 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA.
ALSITE was well represented throughout the meeting as several of our folks were seen giving technical session presentations, hosting ABD hospitality suites and the ABD event, exhibiting in the vendor area, and serving on various SDITE committees. During the meeting, ALSITE received the Outstanding Small Section Runner-Up Award. The SDITE Leadership Program also recognized ALDOT for their partnership with SDITE in leadership training, and at another time later in the meeting, ALDOT reciprocated that gesture and recognized SDITE for their involvement in the partnership.
We had a great time in Mobile hosting our ITE friends from all across the southeast!
