We just returned from the Southern District ITE Meeting in Charlotte, NC, and want to share some highlights of the meeting with you. We had 15 members/affiliates and 4 students in attendance. The meeting began with Becky White leading the invocation which was followed by a Section Roll Call where we introduced ourselves by performing a modified version of “Sweet Home Alabama” with inflatable instruments and microphones. Chris Sellers started us off with a killer electric guitar solo!
The technical sessions were very informative with a heavy focus on vibrant communities, complete streets, and multimodal transportation. Virginia Sisiopiku presented on “Impacts of Transit Integration in a Complete Streets Context”. Rod Turochy and Becky Malenke served as moderators for two of the sessions. We also had the opportunity to participate in hands-on professional development sessions with other meeting attendees.
ALSITE looked great in the Traffic Bowl! As usual, Tommy Lee led the event as emcee. Not only did our student team make it into the finals, but they won second place overall and received $750! They only missed first place by 100 points, and we are very proud of them!
At the banquet, ALSITE won the Outstanding Small Section Award for the fourth year in a row! In addition, our own Richard Caudle received the President’s Award. We are also very proud of him!
We had a great time and want to encourage all of you to attend future SDITE meetings. The next one will be in Greensboro, GA, from March 30 – April 2, 2014. You are guaranteed to have a good time!
