The Joint ALSITE-DSITE 2014 Annual Meeting was held on Wednesday, June 4 through Friday, June 6, 2014 at The Beach Club in Gulf Shores, AL. There were around 140 registrations, including session attendees, vendor exhibits, and guests. We were honored to welcome two very special guests: Hibbett Neel (MS), 2014 ITE International President, and Kirsten Tynch (VA), 2014 SDITE President. Both Hibbett and Kirsten provided the attendees with updates from International ITE and SDITE.
The meeting began with an interactive Professional Development Session entitled An Inside-Out Approach to Employee Development. Technical Session I included presentations on Performance Based Corridor Planning, Teen Driving from an ER Doctor’s Perspective, and a 20th Birthday Celebration of HMR ALSITE Scholarships, Inc. Technical Session II included presentations on State of the States (MS, LA, and AL) in ITS, MAP-21 Updates, and Participant Experiences from LeadershipITE.
During our banquet, awards were presented to the following deserving recipients:
- Bob Jilla – Transportation Engineer of the Year
- Tommy Lee – Transportation Professional of the Year
- Richard Caudle – Meritorious Service Award
Immediately following her presentation on Teen Driving from an ER Doctor’s Perspective, Dr. Kathy Monroe was presented with the Transportation Safety Award.
Two scholarships were also awarded at the banquet. Isaac Wasilefsky received the Charles E. Alexander Memorial Transportation Engineering Scholarship, and Gauen Alexander was awarded the Billy Jones Memorial Traffic Engineering Scholarship
New officers were elected for the 2014 calendar year as follows:
- Jeff Stephenson – President
- Rod Turochy – Vice President
- Clark Bailey – Secretary/Treasurer

Members and guests socialized at the annual Fast Eddie’s Shrimp Boil, Officer’s Reception, and Billy Jones Memorial Golf Tournament. The Scholarship Auction, led by auctioneer Dan Turner, was successful as several thousand dollars were raised to fund future scholarships. Twelve vendors participated in our 2nd Vendor Exhibit.
The meeting concluded with our annual Traffic Bowl where LA, MS, and AL competed for bragging rights; with the AL team picking up their first ever victory in the joint meeting format.
